The Climate Pledge

The Climate Pledge

In September 2019, Amazon and Global Optimism co-founded The Climate Pledge (TCP), a commitment to meet The Paris Agreement 10 years early. As of February 2021, The Climate Pledge has 53 signatories across 18 industries and 12 countries, including Unilever, Verizon, Siemens, Microsoft, IBM, Best Buy, and many more. New signatories to the Pledge have the opportunity to share access to technologies, best practices, and innovations in supply chain enhancements. They are also able to create joint action, collaborating with fellow signatories, to address the most critical climate challenges.

On 21 April 2021, Amazon and Global Optimism welcomed Atlantia to The Climate Pledge, a commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2040—a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement’s goal of 2050.

Signatories to The Climate Pledge agree to:

  • Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis.
  • Implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon emission elimination strategies.
  • Neutralize any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially-beneficial offsets to achieve net-zero annual carbon emissions by 2040 — a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement’s goal of 2050.

“Atlantia's strategic development plan focuses on technological innovation and sustainability, as fundamental tools for expanding our business. We look with great interest at the new forms of integrated mobility and the new logistics models and services, made possible by digital technologies and by an increasingly strategic approach to the environment” said Carlo Bertazzo, Atlantia CEO. “To this point, we are proud of the results achieved to date by our subsidiary Aeroporti di Roma, which manages Leonardo Da Vinci airport in Fiumicino, certified as European best practice on various sectors regarding the environment, such as separate collection, water recycling and reuse, energy production and reduced land use. Leonardo Da Vinci is also one of the few airports in the world with over 30 milion passangers to have achieved standards of excellence as part of the Airport Carbon Accreditation emissions certification system. This is a testament of how strong our commitment against climate change is and of how focused we are to increase the sustainable management of our assets”.

“Atlantia's sustainability policy looks towards the sustainable development strategy adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2015, including 17 goals to be achieved by 2030, and is in line with the indications of the Global Compact. We are convinced that by joining The Climate Pledge, we will make significant progress toward these goals and in achieving net-zero carbon emissions.”
