History

In 1950, IRI established a company named Autostrade Concessioni e Costruzioni S.p.A. In 1956 the first agreement is signed by Autostrade and ANAS for the construction and management of the main north - south artery on the Italian peninsula, the Autostrada del Sole (A1 Milan - Naples). This motorway is completed and inaugurated in 1964.

Development of the business leads, in 1982, to the establishment of the Autostrade Group, which manages over 3,400 km of road network, accounting for 52% of Italy's motorway system and 17% of Europe's toll motorways, and serving 15 regions and 60 provinces in Italy.

Autostrade is privatised in 1999.
the IRI Group, which has been the majority shareholder since the Company's foundation, hands over control to a stable core of private shareholders, who hold a 50.1% stake via Schemaventotto SpA; the free float accounts for the remaining 49.9%.

During 2003 the group completes a series of operations designed to reorganise the shareholder structure, define a new organisational model and balance financial resources.
Autostrade per l'Italia SpA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Autostrade SpA, is established.

In 2007 Autostrade SpA becomes Atlantia, the holding company responsible for investments and portfolio strategies, capable of supporting organic and selective growth in the infrastructure and network management sector, but without having any direct operational role.
The change of name forms part of a restructuring designed to provide a clearer definition of the roles and corporate missions of Autostrade SpA and Autostrade per l'Italia SpA., the operating parent company involved in the management of infrastructure under concession.
